Congratulations class of 2019!

It is an honor to be standing here before you today.  I bring greetings from your sister school in New York, Chapel Field Christian School.  It is wonderful not only to visit your country, but to visit your school and to witness your amazing accomplishments.

You are at the end of your High School career and I am sure that it seems as if time went by very quickly.  Just yesterday you were beginning and now here you are graduating and preparing to go to university.  Many exciting things await you at the university and beyond, new studies, new career, marriage and families of your own.  It is an exciting time.  But it is also a good time to reflect back on what has brought you to this point and what you have gained from your time here.  I am sure you are thankful to your parents who supported your attendance at this school.  I am sure that you are thankful for faithful teachers and an administration who gave you the education you have received.  They have all cooperated in making you who you are today, but what exactly have you received?

What is the purpose of it all? What is the purpose of an education?  To get into the perfect university? To get the perfect job? Certainly life is more than university or career and so must our education be.  Education must be about shaping us into healthy, thriving people, people who have learned what things are important, true, good, and beautiful. I often tell our students back in New York that their education is like a treasure hunt.  They should approach their studies not merely to pass tests, but in order to discover gold and silver in the truths of their subjects. They are to search with all their hearts for wisdom and seek with all their hearts to become virtuous.

The reality is that you have been led to truth and wisdom by your teachers and parents. They have entrusted you with tools for continuing the search.  They have shown you where to find it and what questions to ask in order to discover it. What will you do with these tools?  A British educator from the 19thcentury, Charlotte Mason, once said that all education is self-education.  That is, you are ultimately the only ones who can educate yourselves.  Teachers can teach, but only you can learn.  Teachers cannot not do it for you.  I have no doubt that your teachers have done a brilliant job in teaching.  Now it is your job to take and apply.

I want to challenge you to be good stewards of the gifts that have been given to you by your teachers and parents.  Make them proud by becoming men and women of honor and virtue.  It is my hope for you all that as you leave this place you are walking away with bags full of treasure, with piles of wisdom.  I am hoping that you have become thinkers who are able to discern truth and error.  And I hope that the treasure hunt will continue for the rest of your lives, for the quest for truth and wisdom never ends.

As we say back in America, May God bless you.  Thank You!
