N. Qian (IGCSE

B. Qin (IGCSE

The facilitator shouted, “The price for circles has halved, while the price for triangles has tripled!” Hoorays and groans rippled across the venue. These were followed by excited discussions, frenzied work redistribution and energized runs to the ‘banker’.

This was a scene from last week’s WAIS Summer School Academic Enrichment Saturday, titled ‘High Frequency Trading Amongst Nations’. This manufacturing and trading game illustrated to participants how trade actually works, who can benefit and who may lose.

The game also aimed to help WAIS Summer School attendees understand clearly how trade affects a country’s prosperity. Although it provided only a simple outline of some very complex global trading relationships, one of the aims was to demonstrate the basic issues that determine them.

For the purpose of the above, WAIS Summer School attendees were divided into groups of 6, with each group role-playing different countries, that included USA, UK, Brazil, India, Kenya & Cambodia. Each country manufactured products from raw materials, which were represented by paper shapes of different values.

Subsequently, countries sold their products to the banker. Each group aiming to make as much money as possible. As manufacturing and trading occurred in the background, the game facilitators changed terms of trade and created new trading situations, which reflect real-life situations.  New terms of trade affected the way countries trade, either by stimulating an increase in trading or restricting a country’s manufacturing capacity.

At the end of the manufacturing and trading game, WAIS Business Teacher A. Rao guided participants in a crucial debriefing discussion, where participants expressed their feelings, experiences and understood how their role reflected real-life world trading systems and explored the issues of international trade. Let’s read what our game participants have to say:

L. Li (IGCSE Group 1) - I have learnt a lot about the issues of International Trade. The game made me realised that we have to be creative and efficient in business. It is a very good game that I enjoyed.

N Qian (IGCSE Group 2) – Each group has to be united, divide its workload and each team member has to be diligent to win. I also noted that communication is most crucial. I really like this game.

B Qin (IGCSE Group 3) – While I was having a slight fever on that day, I truly enjoyed the game. The game taught me much about the complexities of International trade.

A Ma (IAL) – Sound strategies, competent leadership and team unity made all the difference between success & failure in this game. Similarly, a country’s economic success is also dependent on these factors. This game is very fun!

‘High Frequency Trading Amongst Nations’ is a fun game to explain how trading relationships work. WAIS business curriculum team is proud that participants enjoyed themselves. Our team truly enjoy imparting complex business concepts through games and activities.
