Pupils on the Young Artist Programme went on a day trip to Suzhou to take inspiration from Chinese culture and history at the world famous Humble Administrators Garden and Tiger Hill. They practiced their observational skills by drawing and photographing the beautiful gardens and buildings.
Our first stop was Tiger Hill where we admired the giant cauldron on our way in and stepped over the traditional arched bridges into another world. Our first stop was the beautiful rock formations and the Sword Pond, which we admired from below and above. Then we went to the top of the hill to see the Song Dynasty pagoda. We walked around the pagoda admiring its grandeur and then the pupils found their favourite view of the pagoda and began to draw. With special attention to the details of the building as well as drawing in perspective, the pupils rose to the challenge of the view, each drawing in their own style.
Then we moved on to the UNESCO World Heritage Listed, Classical Garden of Suzhou, The Humble Administrator’s Garden. First we walked around the garden, stepping through the round doorways and taking in the many beautiful views. We saw beautiful and rare water birds and watched them dive and swim under the water only to return to the surface completely dry and serenely glide amongst the lily’s. Then the pupils each selected the special natural view they wished to draw next, some drew Pensai trees and some drew the rock formations of the small mountains. This required a different type of drawing skill with a special focus on the textures of the rocks and the trees. Once again our pupils rose to the challenge, each drawing artwork in their own unique and individual styles.
With a lovely refreshing ice cream to finish off our day we returned back to school full of memories and thoughts of the beauty of traditional gardens and buildings.
